Willing to relocate: yes, to any location in Africa, where i can get the necessary permission to live and work.
Technologies: Linux, Fullstack, System Administration.
Résumé/CV: on request (software development, CTO, mentoring, training, fluent in English and German)
Like a recent Ask HN: Recommend employers with positive social impact [https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31518945], I am looking for similar work. I am a European software developer who has lived and worked on four continents. Now it's time to move on and so i am looking to relocate to Africa.
While i could find a job elsewhere i believe that the experience living in an area where my work is going to have an impact gives me a better understanding of the needs of the location i am serving. Whether it is through direct contact with clients and users or just by being part of a local community and learning about the reality of living there.
I have more than a decade of experience running a company, doing software development, support and training and mentoring adults and students, as well as working on educational projects, and i am willing to take on a mixture of roles as needed to support a project.
I am willing to consider a volunteer position if a visa can be arranged.
My unique enterprise-grade approach provides clients with long-lasting solutions that address future growth, HA, security, reliability and operational processes.
My expertise is based on 30 years of hands-on technical experience in all areas of IT, but particularly in architecting, building and managing data-driven enterprise platforms.
Recent examples of my work:
- Organisational-level DevOps tooling and security implementations
- Disaster recovery (vm to regional-level scenarios) design and implementation
- Global Azure infrastructure architecture design, deployment, management and security
- Productionalising Kafka and Confluent Connect clusters (SSL, SASL, ACLs, Debezium)

Hey! I have over six years of professional experience in Frontend development. I have been a cofounder of a software agency for over two years. I love working with UI and UX and fixing the business logic of the apps. I'm a problem solver. I have worked mostly with the US, UK, IE, and DE clients.
I have managed small teams of FE/BE devs.
I wrote an ebook for Frontend Developers called "Frontend Unicorn".
We're developing a vocal language between dogs & people using ML to analyze barks to decipher which ones convey meaning. We've spent the last few years understanding how to iterate on interspecies communication. We're looking for someone who deeply understands audio data and a huge plus if you've done work with non-human audio datasets.
Working on a new app design and new features to improve adding barks to our corpus.
I have been refining a platform I have built for some time now and am looking for clients to use it. It could be considered 'GIS in a box'. It consists of a Hasura based GraphQL Postgres and GIS backend, with React in combination with Deck.gl on the front end.
Having worked at many start ups and GIS shops and seen their attempts to build out their platforms, I have seen various mistakes, duplicated effort, incorrect architecture, limited testing environments. My stack solves all of these, and I come with a lot of expertise in how to design a front end to convey the 'data story' your product is trying to tell.
The stack is a CDK based, one click to deploy, multi stage set up. A particularly nice feature is Hasura's database deployment scripts, allowing database changes to be committed. Also out of the box, it allows tight permissioning, performant SQL etc. It has taken me a long long time to get this far and end up with a fully working stack.
Thinking more about the frontend, I have got to a place where I have a large library of abstracted Deck.gl solutions that I have worked on. I am strong React developer, and typically use Ant Design or Mantine for UI, and I have contacts that can help make your app look beautiful very quickly.
I am looking for clients in the GIS space who need a backend and front end out of the box, along with training and development offered. I genuinely feel that my offering here will allow you to focus on solving the business case your start up was for, instead of wasting time on repeating solved problems.
More than 6 years of experience to build, to architect MVP mobile and web-apps for product to bring value to businesses has allowed me to work on following technologies.
- Javascript-Typescript, Node.js, Python,
- Express.js, React.js, Redux/MobX, HTML5, CSS,
- MySQL-PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch, Google Firebase,
- Next.js - SSR (server side rendering), GraphQL with Apollo client
- React-native , React-native-web to share one code base and make it a Mono-repo architecture.
- unit-test and E2E-test with Jest, chai and mocha across the system backend, frontend, cloud with Docker
---
- Having worked with remote teams and clients, I've experience building modular and resilient systems and services for web-apps with Node-Express-React stack, mobile apps with React-Native.
- SaaS Product development where I architected and build the new platform for Reporting system from scratch, helping business to reduce costs at the scale of 200K USD. Built and provided composible front-end, back-end application level reusable modules for tests, UI, log-monitoring and much more.

As a polyglot ICT professional for nearly 40 years, I've analysed datasets with billions of rows, investigated code libraries with 300k lines of code, built event websites that handled 4 million hits in four days, set-up satellite ground stations in outback Australia, built mapping tools, tracked vehicles and bicycles via GPS, reverse engineered software and hardware, built solutions to scan thousands of bar-codes, tracked livestock, trained staff, written hundreds of technical articles and developed code in dozens of languages on as many platforms, interviewed hundreds of people, produced and presented hundreds of live radio programmes, presented on stage and I've run a consulting company for two decades.
I've been an award winning team leader, have travelled, speak English and Dutch and I'm always curious. I prefer Open Source, am an active radio amateur and podcaster and love to troubleshoot, solve problems and discover and document how things work.

I help startups with the UX/UI and web design of their products. This includes web apps, websites, landing pages, screenshots and copywriting, and I can assist with frontend development where needed. My background as a startup founder and full stack developer helps me create practical design solutions that balance usability, aesthetics, development effort and performance. I work to fixed price quotes when projects are self-contained.

The best live example of my work is Checkbot (https://www.checkbot.io/), a browser extension that tests websites for SEO, speed and performance problems. The entire project is my own work including coding the extension itself, UX/UI design, website design (the homepage is optimised to load in 0.7 seconds, 0.3MB data transferred), website copy, and website articles on web best practices.

I've been a software consultant and accomplished poet for over a decade. Having started my own consulting company (and a couple of startups), I've worn pretty much every hat in an organization and understand each role's needs and how to translate between different teams to get everyone aligned behind a plan, allowing me to act as a communication hub.
I'm a force multiplier through the three Ts -- Tooling, Teaching, and the above-mentioned Translation between teams.
I have extensive experience with Scala, Ruby, Python, Javascript, and Typescript.
I specialize in tooling meant to lower or take away the need for scarce developer-hours, and have built a number of low- and no-code solutions for data storage, stream processing, form building, front-end creation, EDI specification for data ingestion and export, complex transformations, and lately tools for dealing with Large Language Models.
Currently, I have been helping organizations with how to turn initial explorations with LLMs into productionized, repeatable processes.
If you are in the Generative AI space and need help providing (developer or end-user) tooling for your offerings, I have a number of thoughts with regard to this and would love to help you change the world at this pivotal moment in history.
On the other hand, if you need help integrating LLMs such as GPT or any other form of Generative AI (audio, visual) into your organization or offerings, or are in need of training in how to use LLMs effectively for any team in your organization, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at poetic.artifice@gmail.com

I'm a front-end engineer proficient in JS, React, Node and of course HTML/CSS. I have a keen eye for design and have taught professionally at Butler University.
My experience spans across the stack, excelling at both the front of the front end and back of the front end (e.g. Node, Next.js). I'm also comfortable on the far side of the back end, especially in a LAMP stack.
When it comes to collaboration I have a coaching mindset which means I am open-minded, curious, flexible and client-centered.
I've worked with startup teams and enterprise clients. My work was pivotal for one of my startup clients being acquired. I continued to work with them post-acquisition, scaling what was initially a small MVP into a product that serves tens of thousands of users to this day.

I'm the founder of MorphMarket.com. We are an online marketplace that connects breeders and keepers of lizards, geckos, snakes, frogs, spiders and other captive-bred pets. Launched in 2015, we are the largest reptile-related website in the world with about 5,000 active sellers. Our users passionately love the least loved animals.
We are seeking to add another experienced React front-end developer to our fully remote team.
Our reptile site is implemented in Python, of course. We use a Django/Postgres/Redis backend and new frontend development is in React/Typescript. Our legacy pages use JQuery/Bootstrap. As a FE dev, you could think of yourself as a Python handler. :)~

This is a full-time, long-term engagement. Most working hours should be during US timezones.
Please contact us at jobs@morphmarket.com with a statement of interest, relevant qualifications/experience, and billing rate. Thanks!
With over a decade of experience as a versatile software developer, I bring a robust skillset in React, React Native (my preference), and Node.js to the table. I'm proficient in crafting native React Native modules using Java, Swift, and C++. I have a history of successfully completing projects for clients, from emerging startups to established enterprises, primarily focusing on mobile app development and API design. OPEN FOR MISSIONS | freelance, computer vision projects on remote-basis
I am a data scientist particularly active in computer vision using object detection and image classification.
Do you have projects or PoC where you wonder if it is possible to develop an algorithm capable of detecting / tracking objects, or recognizing images?
Please feel free to contact me. Before starting up a collaboration, I will examine all criteria necessary to make it a success.
A bit of background. I have successfully deployed multiple missions into production. These were often challenging projects where I developed machine learning applications from scratch. That means that I collected (supplementary) data, annotated data, performed preprocessing, prepared quality inspections, developed machine / deep learning models and deployed the application into production.
Please find more infos below, I am looking forward to speaking with you!

SEEKING WORK | UK/Global – Cambridge/London/Remote
I'm a software engineer with coming up for two decades of programming experience. I've helped startups get started and big companies keep going.
I've organised a couple of jobs through HN now; it's been a good way to find interesting projects, and my clients have been pleased with the work. One said: "Thank you! I've played with it a bit and it looks very impressive! Way better than what I imagined this project could be."
I've worked on a very wide variety of web-based projects, as well as React Native, and other platforms, so I will be able to hit the ground running on most projects. If you're doing something a bit esoteric, that could still suit me – I've done FPGAs, network protocols, more ETL than you can shake a stick at, and devised novel algorithms.
I am productive in every commercial programming language I've tried. In the last 5 years I've done commercial projects in (at least):
Typescript/Javascript (React Native, browser, and Node.js), Ruby, Java, C#, Python, Swift and Go. I'm trying to find someone to pay me to do some Rust (I completed an Advent of Code in it.)
As well as building things, I am also good at talking to people to help figure out what we should be building. I enjoy working with other developers and helping the team learn, but I am also a good lone wolf at getting things done. I'm happiest on fixed-term projects that I can complete on a schedule that suits both of us, and my clients have been very happy with this process too.
Hi, I'm Gert and I have almost 15 years of experience in various technical roles (software engineer, software architect, solution architect, team-lead). I'm passionate about building software with cutting edge technologies.
Professionally, I've been mostly involved in the .NET and Angular/React ecosystems, but in my own time I enjoy playing around with other technologies and programming languages. I'm looking for a new gig and I certainly don't mind learning something new.
I'm based in Germany, used to syncing with US timezones. Been building software for a living for 18 years now, 8 of those as CTO for two different companies (one I grew from 7 to 250 employees). Went into consulting to become more flexible and get more diverse experience.
I built a bunch of teams and products during those years, so I offer a variety of things, from fractional/interim CTO to technical freelance work:
1. Building software (and teams) from scratch
2. Helping out with specific technical or organisational problems
3. Supporting and/or coaching an existing CTO or similar, taking work off their desk and setting up a situation where things work smooth without me
4. Helping you find and train a solid CTO or other technical manager
5. Keeping outsourcing companies honest by ensuring their work and staff aligns with what you agreed on
6. Technical and organisation due diligence
I do this stuff part time or full time, depending on what you need. Technologically, I'm a generalist who worked in various areas and with most common stacks by now (and some uncommon ones). Probably strongest with web development (JavaScript, TypeScript, React), Android and iOS development, game development, followed by C++, JVM and Python. Also did significant work in Ruby (mostly Rails), Rust, C# and various Lisps.
I am an experienced software engineer with a career spanning over a decade, having worked in leadership positions on commercial projects as well as hybrid commercial/open source projects, in fields such as consumer gaming, cloud storage, and drone control systems.
In the past few years I have worked on real-time low latency video streaming systems on both mobile and embedded linux platforms, and designed and implemented a commercial end-to-end encrypted cloud storage system for the EU market.
For most of my career I have both contributed to and maintained open source projects, such as Arch Linux ARM where I maintained the Beaglebone Black platform for several years. I was also the maintainer of the OpenHD project[1], where I reorganized and modernized the development and release process, and as the lead developer I created a cross platform touchscreen drone controller called QOpenHD[2].
I have real world experience deploying applications on multiple embedded linux platforms, Mac and Windows systems programming (C, C++, and Rust), iOS/iPad and macOS application development (Obj-C, Obj-C++, Qt, Swift, Rust), and Windows desktop application development (C# .NET/WPF, Qt, Rust).
Experience: I am a UX Designer and Researcher and have been working for over two years now. I have handled projects from conception to research to hand-off. I was previously working at Perch, a Canadian prop-tech startup, conducting research and designing their platforms. I worked collaboratively with product managers and the design lead to gather requirements, conduct research and testing, and create user flows, mockups, and high-fidelity prototypes. I have also worked with Rbc and Aerobi in the past. I completed my master's in digital media/interactive design from North-Eastern University Boston.
Technologies: Sketch, Figma, and Adobe CC with basic understanding of HTML, CSS.
I have a PhD in operations research---essentially, I solve optimization problems. You can give me a real-world problem and I can translate it into a mathematical model that can be solved (often optimally) via integer programming, constraint programming, or other methods.
I'm currently working on a column generation-based daily fantasy sports (DFS) solver as a personal project. Taking as input the predictions/requirements of the user, this solver can generate optimal lineups for multi-entry tourneys. It is, as far as I'm aware, the only DFS solver that can generate provably optimal sets of lineups for multi-entry DFS tourneys.

- You have a lot of data but it's all over the place and not connected in any significant way so you spend a lot of time working in spreadsheets
- You spend a lot of time thinking about and doing a manual task you wish could just finally be automated
- You want to prototype and build something quickly so you can start showing it to your customers
- You want to have your operations managed at a lower cost

We work in many stacks, but React and Node.js are at the core of our expertise.
I’m a web and app developer with over 15 years of professional experience. I specialize in full-stack web development, but I’m also experienced in iOS development, server administration, database design, and more. I am an independent web developer (since 2005) that specializes in complex CMS-based websites (ProcessWire / Drupal / WordPress) and bespoke ecommerce where end-clients need to be able to effortlessly manage the content. I do a lot of website re-development (ie, sites that have fallen into disrepair and need a fresh start with existing data). HTMX, Alpine.js, Hyperscript, Tailwind CSS are some of my favorite tools.
SEEKING WORK - Contract, Remote, based in NYC area, backend engineer
I am a backend expert, having built and maintained highly available systems for several companies over the last 7 years, in addition to over 20 total years of software development experience. I learn new things extremely quickly.
You will like working with me because I:
* hold your goals as my priorities
* communicate verbosely yet synthesize well
* my rates are reasonable in exchange for the value I deliver
* I guarantee I will get the job done
Concrete examples:
* built the streaming data architecture for realtime game player information and game stats for one of the top 3 US sports leagues (can’t name drop!) using Redpanda/Kafka on Azure+Terraform, and implemented its developer portal using Gravitee to provide first class streaming API support and monetization.
* Implemented a vector DB for one of the leading AI image hallucination platforms (millions of users) to provide an image similarity service.
* replatformed dozens of jobs to AWS Lambda for a startup hedge fund, vastly improving QoS and maintenance cost. Line 1 to platform-in-prod time 3 months.
* built a ~50 node, AWS, Dockerized, Terraform-deployed distributed system to provide realtime, transformed trade data from crypto exchanges to a Kafka pipeline and data lake (fodder for an analytics platform). Met 5000msec SLA across arbitrarily many exchanges and ticker symbols. Blue-green deployment for complete CICD safety. Cloudwatch metrics proved SLA was met and provided general system oversight.
* built a framework to collapse dozens of singleton ETL programs into one config-driven, simple C# application performing the same functionality at ~80% reduction in maintenance cost year over year.

SEEKING FREELANCER(S) - Remote - AI Product Lab Roles
We're a small AI product lab seeking talented freelancers who:
* Have good "problem taste" / enjoy figuring out what's worth working on
* Have big visions while focusing on the small details
* Persistently work hard and take lots of action
* Overflow with ideas and value autonomy
* Dislike senseless rules
Roles:
1. Generalist/Back-End Engineer/Prompt Engineer Hybrid: Build AI tools that help people automate work and delegate tasks to GPT. Multiple openings for this role. The roles are solo instead of team based.
3. Reviewer and Writer and/or Video Creator: Test, review, and create content on AI tools, developer tools, and products, similar to the style of Wirecutter.
4. AI Research Science and ML Engineering Tutorial Creator: Develop comprehensive tutorials for AI Research and ML Engineering akin to Rails Tutorial and Ruby Koans.
5. Product-minded engineer. Build things that are easy to use and solve users underlying needs.
6. Create your own role.
To apply, email clay@studionumberzero.com with "HN" in the subject. Make the email 6 bullet points or fewer, include 2 links (the links should be live URLs to use/see the thing, or if not, include screenshots/a demo video, github links are optional but don't make them the only link unless your readme shows the end-user experience) of projects where you were the solo/primary creator.
If hired, you’ll be initially given a project vision, then the same day or next day you’ll run some possibilities of what it could concretely look like by me, then the same day or next day you’ll start on the building. Shipping 1-2x a day and sending me an email containing a screenshot/demo, hours worked so far, and a 1-2 bullet points about plan for the next block. Self-directed, you’ll be deciding what to work on and how to do it in a way that is useful for end-users.
P.S. You will be provided GPT-4 API access and GPT-4 playground access and will be encouraged to use it to help with building, ideas, and reasoning/planning.
> then the same day or next day you’ll run some possibilities of what it could concretely look like by me, then the same day or next day you’ll start on the building. Shipping 1-2x a day and sending me an email containing a screenshot/demo,
This seems more demanding and tedious for the available hours.
