DHH has great instincts when it comes to programming and technical projects, but he is not a very smart guy about anything else. Further, he is a bit of a low class buffoon. So just use his stuff and ignore whatever else he rants about on his own time and property, this is the only way to get by in life. You couldn't read a book, watch a movie, or enjoy any music, if you constantly had to vet the authors against your own political views.

Totally agree, you can respect the quality of someone’s work without needing to buy into everything they say or do outside of it. I also don’t get where this purity test comes from, but it’s definitely not a good thing.

In this case it's hard to separate the art from the artist. DHH wields significant power in the community and industry. Shopify is likely to back him and they are a major ruby / rails sponsor. He also has immense influence.

Yeah, that never happened.

And why in the world do you think it didn't? I haven't seen the particular video he's referring to but I've seen enough that I do not find his claim unreasonable.

Remember that 47 minutes of video Israel was screening for reporters but did not release? They've gotten permission from some of the families and have released part of it. You definitely see people being killed on camera.

And the really important part isn't the video itself, but that it's stuff that Hams people chose to post on social media. Something to be cheered, not a horror.

Because it would be in the Hamas-massacre.net site if it was real. That's an IDF run site. They can't even confirm any rape victims on that site. They only have non-confirmed allegations on that site.

And, no, they didn't get permission from any of the other victims families to publish on that site.

So, the IDF literally has no direct confirmation of rape.

Been using a flip for four years (Samsung) and will buy another when the time comes (not necessarily Samsung).

Ever wanted a smaller phone? That's a flip phone, it just happens to expand when you need it. Ever drop your phone and damage the screen ? The closed flip phone is super sturdy. Ever wanted to put your phone on the table and use it with one hand, laptop style? Flip. Even in general use, having it slightly bent towards you is a nicer experience that a fully flat phone.

Yes, it has a slight crease in the middle, it has never bothered me even a little. And now, there's an actual microcrack across the crease, doesn't really bother me either, but for some people it might. Look forward to improvements in the next generations.

I had the Flip 2, 3, and 5. I just switched to the Moto Razr Ultra and I feel like it is even better. The external screen works almost like the internal screen, making it extremely easy to use. Samsung locks down their external screen pretty hard and you need a lot of work arounds that still don't give me the same functionality as the Razr.

I also got the Clicks physical keyboard case for it, which turns it into a modern Blackberry type phone. I love it. The physical keyboard means no on-screen keyboard taking up your external screen space. I only actually open my phone a few times a day, which really helps keep doomscrolling at bay. Full discloser, the keyboard isn't perfect and definitely has some quirks and tradeoffs but on the whole I'm glad I got it.

When it goes on sale, I'm going to give it a go with the Moto Razr 2025 with the Clicks keyboard case. Closed, it looks almost exactly like an old Blackberry, but it can flip open to a normal-ish (coming from an iPhone Mini very tall) screen when needed.

Does anyone know what happened to the original people of Poland? I.e. the article explains that almost the entire pre-existing population of Poland was replaced by Slavs around the 5th/6th century, but not through war or conquest. So where did all the people go, and why?

I don't know if it is connected, but 6th century is when the plague of Justinian happened and it spread to Northern Europe too. In 536 there was a volcanic winter, one of the worst climate-impacting events in documented history that started an ice age. Was a pretty tough time to survive in general.

"Original" depends on what time period you're referring to, because the people before the Slavs weren't there for that long themselves.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indo-European_migrations

But in reference to the Slavic migrations, I think they likely headed west and south:

It was so shit an boring they simply turned around and left.

spoken like a true Polak!

It's 2D if you only have one eye.

It's not even 2D with one eye. We can estimate distance purely from your eyes focal point.

with one eye you have temporal parallax, depth cues (ordering of objects in your vision), lighting cues, relative size of objects (things further away are smaller) together with your learned comparison size etc.

Nope. There are a number of monocular depth cues: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depth_perception#Monocular_cue...

The damage was visible long before the explosion, during ascent (not sure if anyone has explained how it happened). Though your point still stands.

I was very surprised that that flap still held up during the stress testing on atmospheric re-entry.

The part that burned was damaged from early on, likely at, or right after, separation. So the integrity of that flap was already very compromised. I actually thought the flap would disintegrate on re-entry with that kind of damage. But no, they even put full stress on it, unfolding it while supersonic through the atmosphere, like a champ.

At what T+ do you see the damage occurring? Thank you.

Yes, it was not the explosion what done it.

It looked like it happened during separation somehow.

Even Steve Jobs, who was by most accounts a pretty cold fish (his many other qualities notwithstanding), said something similar. By memory, he said something like: With your kids, it's as if they carry your heart around outside of your body. Which I found super touching and apt.

"Making the decision to have a child - it is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body." -- Elizabeth Stone

High critic score / high audience score = Good

High critic score / low audience score = Paid-for hype, or politically motivated reviews

Low critic score / high audience score = Possibly a good movie

Low critic score / low audience score = Bad

I have to disagree with your take on "High critic score / low audience score". There is a swathe of more challenging, experimental, or art house movies that fall into this category. These reviews fill the void where another audience only place like imdb falls short.

Low critic score / high audience score = Bad, but enjoyable for the masses

Maybe we need to define "bad," because I would argue an enjoyable movie is good. Movies don't need to be avant garde to be good. They just need to be entertaining.

I wish this were true, but the critics as a polity just don't have a sophisticated palate. Many individual critics much like many general audience members do, I'm sure.

This sounds appealingly highbrow, but it's not particularly accurate in my experience. I think the critics often get into their own bizarre headspace that nobody else cares about.

this feels like an interview question

Here is a better heuristic:

High critic score / low audience score = Avant garde type films. Might go over your head

Low critic score / high audience score = Maybe fun but forgettable movie

I feel pretty confident that Captain Marvel, Emilia Perez, Spy Kids, Sausage Party, The Last Jedi, and Ghostbusters 2016 aren't at much risk of going over the heads of audiences, but you're entitled to your opinion if you think they count as avant garde cinema

Hey it's a heuristic so ymmv
