I’ve been wondering about the effectiveness of something similar as an anti-ALPR measure. Most ALPRs seem to have infrared, but I wonder if this the presence of this would affect the non-IR cameras in regular light? I’m not quite certain how IR vs non-IR cameras are implemented in such systems, or if there even is a separation (are there two separate cameras, or is it just one).

Well, if you’d ever be interested in lightening your collection by one for a fellow enthusiast, I’ve always wanted to get my hands on an SGI to restore/rebuild. I’m currently working on an IBM 5150+5153, but the workshop always has space for more.

I don’t know what it is, but there’s something just so mystical about SGI’s computers. I don’t know animation, and never got to work with IRIX, but at some point I want to get my hands on a Silicon Graphics computer (as well as a Sharp X86000).

No, you can. In regular Firefox (without doing any shenanigans) the extension will be installed for the session (until the browser is closed), but Firefox Developer Edition lets you just install and run unsigned/invalid extensions (which is very useful if you occasionally have to change your clock back to 2018 and don’t want to lose all extensions).

Heh. Many years and a few laptops ago, I had an MSI which, on several different flights, as soon as I plugged the charger into the laptop knocked out the power for my entire row and the row in front or behind me. Though, one notable time it took down all of the outlets.

Discord is shipped in a number of package managers (I don’t know the status for mainline apt repos).

I know that this isn’t an easy solution/doesn’t go against your argument, because it isn’t download-and-run simple, but discord’s version can be modified with no consequences in a build_info.json file. I used to do it manually, back when they updated it every once-in-a-while, but due to their current tendency to push updates every few days or so, I’ve made a few-line bash script to fetch the latest version (thank you httptap) and patch the file for me. For screen sharing, I use whatever current discord client on GitHub supports it for Wayland, which usually has the added benefit of not limiting quality and framerate options.

But yes, you do have a point, it’s not just ‘as simple’ as it is under Windows - when Windows works properly.

What programmable EDID emulator plug do you use? I was recently looking into them, and it wasn’t clear what devices had what features, or if any (cheaper) ones were any good.

Ah. Any affordable alternatives? Or just hacking cheap ones.

There’s several going for roughly 30,000-40,000 yen (before shipping) on [buyee.jp](https://buyee.jp/item/search/query/Sharp%20X68000) currently. I’m considering picking one up myself, though I’m quite sure I’d have no use for it (please outbid me).

Oh wow, those are amazing. I really have to add one to my collection .. but probably, I'd have a better time buying a plane ticket to Tokyo and going shopping for one, locally. ;)

That is quite a bit cheaper than I paid for mine ~10 years ago. Gen 1 X68000, I think I paid total with shipping customs etc somewhere in the range of $1000 CAD.

From a quick read, this appears to be referring to the same process as was used by NileRed in their video about making bulletproof wood (https://youtu.be/CglNRNrMFGM). It should be interesting to tool around with when it hits store shelves.

That video was my first thought when I heard about this a few days ago. I always wondered how it was possible to make wood this strong yet it seemingly had no use cases. Maybe it's finally about to find some real world use cases.

I had a glossy screen for a few years, but recently switched to the matte. I’m quite liking it, it certainly lets me work in more environments without blinding glare. It’s nice and sharp, no major complaints. (One minor nitpick though: unlike the glossy, you can’t turn the brightness down until the backlight is off).
