I initially got an "Error: Your application used more stack memory than the safety cap" message running that.

This solved it: https://github.com/jruby/jruby/issues/346

tl;dr:

    rvm get stable

then reinstall jruby 1.7.0

"rvm get head; rvm install jruby" also works ;)
