They've figured stuff out. (We could say software engineering has been around for 50+ years, but I think that in its modern form it's probably more like 20 years. Highly subjective statement, I know.)

The fad also seems to be to aggressively forget learned lessons and abandoned proven techniques, so 20 years is probably generous.
