Ask HN: Is there a hosting provider that offers 2FA for webmail?

Most of the hosting providers that I came across use cPanel and the offer webmail clients such as OpenCube, SquirrelMail, etc. I’ve never seen one that would also offer 2FA for webmail. Is there a such hosting provider or do I need to take VPS and run my mail server and webmail by myself?

I’m looking for hosted/self hosted alternative for Gmail/Proton/Outlook. EU based if possible.

I was hopeful Migadu was going to work for you. See https://migadu.com/procon/#no-mailbox-2fa-yet for why they don't (yet) offer it. It also probably explains why it's not more prevalent.

Running a mail server in 2025 so fraught, I'd caution anyone against attempting it. Not sure why you would want that trouble with so many options available, including privacy-focused vendors.

If Proton is not appealing, what about mailbox.org?

Mailbox.org is one of the alternatives that I was looking at.

I’m just surprised that there is a bunch of hosting companies that say “we offer hosting and webmail in one package” but without 2FA. So I was wondering is 2FA so complex that it is not part of entry level hosting services.

2FA isnt complex. But i guess anyone getting their email from their hosting provider isnt very technical and therefore wont use it so why build it.

Yes, this could be it.
