Plex disables streaming your own media unless you pay, destroying the one and only use Plex had...wow

Reddit's /r/plex is full of similar feedback. Previously, free streaming of your own media was a way for them to possibly draw you in to their paid offerings. Now how will they acquire customers?

Plex is kind of a victim of its own success. Its best bet is that it's an easier / more feature-rich solution than the alternatives (Jellyfin). I am a Plex Pass subscriber so my family and friends should be unaffected by this change but I imagine many people will start switching to Jellyfin or some other alternative.

This many major changes this quickly isn't a good sign. What costs are even associated with streaming my own hosted media to my own devices? There's an external Relay option available, but that's only used as a fallback option.

To be clear... does this mean that I won't be able to stream media from my PC/NAS to my TV any more? I mean... that's a pretty basic function of any streaming software, so hopefully I'm misunderstanding this?

In any case, I've mostly moved over to Jellyfin now that there is a decent app for it available on my Amazon Fire Stick. Have to say, Jellyfin may have been clunky in the past, but now it's a real alternative to Plex.

> We are also changing how remote playback works for streaming personal media (that is, playback when not on the same local network as the server).

I was basing my comments on the email I received from Plex, which did not make that clear at all - thanks.
