What about the almost sacred checks and balances that an independent judiciary provides?

Authoritarians do not want an independent judiciary challenging their power. They are sending a loud message to the judiciary that it's "our way or the highway."

Once they've established control of the judiciary, their coup will be complete, as they already have complicit control of the legislative branch.
