To be fair, nothing in human history has psychologically prepared us for semi-real-time two-way interaction with thousands or millions many people at once. Once I realized this, I began to become much more empathetic toward popular public figures who “crash out” (as the kids say these days) on social media. I've never experienced this myself, firsthand, but after seeing this happen time and again over the course of the past two decades or so—especially since the advent of smartphones, which dramatically increased the possible frequency of such communication—it's the logical conclusion I've reached.
