Why did early CD-ROM drives rely on awkward plastic caddies? (hackaday.com)

I thought at first this was discussing why early CD-ROM devices had a flimsy tray that came out and held the disk vs. just being able to push the CD into a slot and have it automatically pulled in like on modern devices.
