This happened to me years ago - I realized that the interviewer was expecting a very specific answer, but that didn’t apply to the specific system I was working on ( something like ‘ we dont follow best practice X because it’s a 25 yo app with a few million lines of code and a mountain of technical debt and this is very different from the greenfield project you’re working on ‘) - he somehow got angry so I stopped explaining.

I didn’t get the job, but learned a very good lesson !
