Ask HN: Privacy focused personl accounting software

Hey there!

I'm looking for a privacy focused (i.e. NON web, no sync) accounting software for personal use.

For the past 12 years, I've been recording every penny. I tried multiple software throughout the years: Excel, GnuCash, MoneyDance, Banktivity (which I use now), however none of them proved to be good enough.

I spend money in various currencies, have investments, and manage multiple bank accounts, including joint household account. I don't care for budgeting, all I want to see is how much I spend per category, and identify where I overspend (I'm find with entering data manually, did it for years). Banktivity is good, but it has a shit load of useless features, as well as no comprehensive reporting on investments.

I'm considering complementing my investment tracking with Portfolio Performance[0], but I still need a software to keep track of day to day accounting (income, expense and categories + comprehensive reports). GnuCash comes close, but before I migrate 12 years worth of data, I was wondering if someone knows anything better.

Things I do NOT care for: budgeting, web, subscription based, bank sync (but stock sync is needed). No CLI please (sorry ledger guys). I DO need simple data files that can be put in iCloud, and support for MacOS.

Thanks!

YouNeedABudget traditionally had good reviews for this sort of thing: https://www.ynab.com/

Unfortunately, they did move to a subscription model eventually :( I think V4 is the last one-time-purchase version. WayBackMachine has the downloads:

MacOS (x86 32-bit): https://web.archive.org/web/20190112221233/https://classic.y...

I think you'll need to convert it to 64-bit to run on Apple Silicon: https://gitlab.com/bradleymiller/Y64 (didn't try it)

Windows: https://web.archive.org/web/20190112221246/https://classic.y...

---------

I don't use it anymore, so let me know if you want my old v4 license key.

Thanks.

AFAIK YNAB does not support multi currency. At least on web it does not, not sure about the legacy version.
