My YC idea. Somebody build it
1 point by jay_kyburz on April 20, 2024 | hide | past | favorite | 6 comments
I'm not really in a position to apply to YC, so I thought I would post my idea and see if anybody else thought it was interesting and would like to run with it.

I'll post it as a comment, and if anybody else has an idea they would like to give away, I would love to read it too!

Uber, but with dogs driving.

"Hey, thanks for picking me up. You're such a good boy."

I'm actually working on something like that, but not so US-centric... More like a "What's happening in the world right now" thing.

It's called "Both Sides"

We have a dangerous fracture forming in our society because people have divided themselves into silos where they are only exposed to left or rightwing media. I think it would be valuable to try and bring people together so they can be exposed to multiple points of view.

Imagine a news website split into three columns. Down the centre is a very dry, wikipedia style description of events with testimony from eye witnesses. It should aim to be as accurate and neutral as possible. It should present full quotes and press releases. It should not try and create a story that's entertaining.

Then on either side of the the dry list of events, you have a two journalists interpret the content in the centre and present multiple points of view. These columns are where the entertainment happens.

Then below you have a heavily moderated user commentary section where the community can share their thoughts.

There are countless little problems that would need to be overcome, but the objective would be to try and find a market of people looking for a source of news without spin, and perspectives of both sides of the political spectrum.

From personal experience - such startups have a hard time getting traction.

I worked in The Daily Edit https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/the-daily-edit/nmlm...

It was an AI-based news feed. What it did. You could read news on your favorite news website and it showed you missing details for articles that were present in articles from other news outlets.

So basically, a summarized Ground News?

I think Ground News is very interesting but seems very focused on the biases of other news sites, with summaries of what other news sites are saying.

I had imagined trying to become a primary source, but Ground seems to have taken a very sensible approach and built upon everybody else.
