Duolingo distracted with music, Netflix and OpenAI invest in language learning (pocket-lint.com)

I'm very surprised there's not more coverage on this matter. While both Netflix (acquired language learning app THINKIN in March) and OpenAI (lead investor in language learning app Speak) believe there is money to make in language learning, Duolingo puts all their R&D into music, apparently with little success.

My two cents: Duolingo kind of has a quasi-monopoly on language learning. Adding LLM (which they are doing) may improve their quality, but it probably won't get them more users. I would even guess that it won't even get existing users to pay more.

Adding music and maths may bring them new users, though, and therefore more revenue.

Netflix/OpenAI can obviously hope to get some revenue by going into language learning, so it makes sense for them to try and compete with Duolingo.

The title is completely different from the original, which is not about Netflix/OpenAI at all: "I tried Duolingo Music and you should probably stick to learning Spanish".

It is a review of Duolingo Music.

I did not put the title of the article as title of the post, but what I thought is worth pointing out as described in my comment, there is no coverage on the big picture. While there has been coverage on OpenAI/Speak and Netflix/Thinkin and Duolingo/music, there is no comment (at least that I could come across) that puts these three into context.
