I'll eternally miss cool x11 gimmicks that could be added to any desktop like compiz, xpenguins, xsnow and xneko
I don't think it's impossible to do that, it's just not written by anyone yet.
There could be an extension to the compositor that would give your application the ability to add those gimmicks if the user chooses to allow that.
