I'm really worn out on people referring to how social media operates as an "algorithm", especially after they've had mass layoffs of the developers that would implement smarter code.
All social media that allows ad sales is running based on private and individual user-based advertising referred to as "boosting"... These social apps do not label ads paid for by users at all, which is a conflict of interest for every app that allows individual advertising. They have no incentive to uphold their original services if it reduces their profits from advertising. The platforms have turned the visibility tap to a drip for organic views on every account that doesn't pay for ads and premium services as well. They have totally converted into paid services for the very content that users post.
It's the worst kind of deception, because they now have funnels that capture tons of free labor, political influence, personal information, user generated content, and now even hard earned money from millions of people struggling to be creators all into the ownership of their unregulated platforms so they can then firewall everything and charge the very same creators and users to access it.
Social media companies likely colluded and schemed up and hyped crypto and NFTs, and countless other total scams, and now they've created basically advertising schemes that are like casino gambling, where the down side is being totally ignored if you don't play the game.
There is even a bootleg profit market for current and ex employees in hacking user accounts for ransom running unchecked and rampant ID fraud on many accounts with absolutely no customer support from platforms nor action to stop it, which has been going on for years unchecked by regulators. Total grift market.
We really need to ditch it all, hold leadership accountable for the lies, and start all over with actually useful human centered social innovation.
There is likely no "for you" page, it's all run by who is advertising the most now.
Seems like half of this is complaining about the low quality content that many people in our population genuinely enjoy, and the other half is complaining about the algorithm over fitting on small amounts of interaction. The latter of which primarily impacts brand new accounts.
