Starts off with the perfect Lick quote,

I feel like software is still in some pre-history phase, a time before you can just open up the editor & look at the flow-based view of where data came from & went, before you can openly hack around with that flow. The software all seems so hard & opaque to users, not at all in it's soft form when it is delivered. I believe over time in a softening of software, where we advance into a malleability.

HyperCard & Apple script are two bright points in this history. But today they seem mostly historical. Apple had significant presence in this drive enable users to augment, but like the industry as a whole, this vision has mostly rusted out.
