The FAA has and is burdensomely overregulating, adding cost, and invading the privacy of law-abiding users of what are glorified R/C planes and helicopters that existed for 50 years without a problem. Requiring internet access and sending real-time GPS location data is insane.

If malicious users of laser pointers or flying toys, these are physical policing problems that aren't solvable by penalizing law-abiding users. Criminals aren't going to register their devices and there will be no data to do the work of lazy policing. Independent of drone ID compliance, there ought to be X-band or higher band radar completely walling restricted and controlled airspace to detect all possible transponder-less objects.

Build your own drone and avoid these crappy laws

If you're willing to break the law then building your own drone doesn't help you do that more than a noncompliant DJI drone does.

Some laws should be broken and repealed

Does it mean it is illegal to purchase or operate this type in the US?

It means that you would have to buy an external Remote ID module.
