Does prolonged Vitamin D supplementation reduce the ability of the body to produce its own?

No. D production is not produced internally, it's produced by the skin being exposed to ultraviolet radiation.

But does the skin always produce the same amount of vitamin D just depending on the light and regardless of the levels in the body or is there a control loop that makes the skin produce less?

It ignores what's already in your liver. It will just keep producing until you stay out of the sun. Roofers have tons of vitamin D in their body.

Amount produced is dependent on both duration and intensity.
