reddit had a fascinating take on this. Obviously, killing your neighbours is not good. But the amount of widespread socialised "I wish they were dead" that comes from leaf blowers, lawn mowers, hedge clippers, car exhausts. It's as if both sides across the gap of normal living expectations, "my home is my castle" and a right to privacy and peaceful enjoyment of your home can't come to an agreement.
honestly I have no idea what the "fix" is (aside from "don't kill people just because they annoy you") -because every one of the HOA rules which are designed to minimise angst probably cause as much as they cure. And, "just talk to each other" ignores the power dynamics across a boundary. I live here vs I own this vs The law vs "you're not from round here" vs petty racism vs ageism vs mental health vs simple shitfuckery.
(where I am, it's usually about dogs, and exhaust pipes. I didn't realise that some of these hoon boy racer drivers actually have a loud-soft knob inside the car, to alter how much the exhaust farts when they accellerate. It means for some people "its your choice to annoy me" is actually pretty real: they're not just deliberately pulling on that throttle, they even tweaked the exhaust to make it worse)
The lack of any counter-forces against the anti-social/genuine-pieces-of-shit is getting awfully problematic.
I really want to believe in society, in believing in one another, in treating each other ok. When people consistently act like asshats & there's zero counterforce we can apply, it creates real & terrible tension. It destabizes.
My like weird next world view is we just start logging online people who are total asshats & let their bad acts accrue and accrue until it's just blisteringly obvious to all what a dillweed someone is, for many reasons, for consistently being a turd to many people, ongoingly, and to let society easily just recognize that.
