Ask HN: Prettiest Free Domain

I realized today that I've lost my personal domain name. It wasn't set to auto-renew and the warning emails slipped through my inbox.

Sad as this was, it's kind of a relief. I hate having to maintain my own domain and it wasn't much more than a calling card. I would still like to host some stuff but not own / pay for a domain. What free services have nice domains that I can use to host my own stuff.

* Cloudflare Pages: pages.dev * Firebase: web.app

.tk, .ml, .ga, .cf, .gq

https://www.freenom.com/en/freeandpaiddomains.html

you still have to renew though

Worth reading this HN thread posted just recently:

> Freenom (the operator of .tk, .ml, .ga, .cf, .gq TLDs) is falling apart

I wouldn't rely on them.

if you don't want to pay, there are services like freenom, but they'll take your page over once you get over a certain number of visitors. I'd recommend just using a static github pages instance pointed to whatever server you have running a backend if you have one. GH pages has(to me) been very reliable and has never once broken

ah thanks for the update. It was (awful) while it lasted. I wonder if 000webhost is still around? I used to host my php scripts there as a kid

Just buy a domain and register it for like 10 years you cheapskate...

Yeah what's stopping people doing this? Do they hate 'advance fees' and just want to pay yearly because they consider themselves financially savvy, or what is the issue?
