It genuinely seems to me that this kind of a website should be able to handle this level of traffic on a single $10/month VPS, nevermind require multiple servers. But I'm probably just out of touch with how modern webdev is done.

Especially if they’re fronting it with a CDN. The only things they should be hitting a DB for would be order process stuff and account mgmt.
