It's interesting how upvotes or downvotes on HN are sometimes seemingly caused by how much the opinion stated is distanced from the commonly held view. This thread attracts lots of APL fans, and being critical on the approach causes downvotes. Similarly in other topics - if unusual, unpopular opinion is stated, even if it's novel and enlightening, it could be frown upon as well.
It's not just that it is unpopular, but that it contributed nothing. We all know this code is dense and not what most people (me included) want C code to look like, so a comment just stating so without contributing something more constructive will not do well.
