Basalt tape might be an option: it's commonly used for car exhaust insulation.

As hot as exhaust pipes get, I doubt it would compare to being directly next to an open flame.

A gas flame (ie. The blue ones when air is premixed) don't give off a lot of radiant heat, so anything below them ought to be okay.

Sounds like a job for kaowool.
