I was particularly struck by this: [..] One of the biggest shifts: a state law that went into effect July 1 requiring middle schools to start no earlier than 8 a.m. and high schools no earlier than 8:30 a.m, though campuses can also offer “zero period” classes earlier in the morning.
Supporters of the first-in-the-nation policy, which Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law in 2019, cite what they say is “overwhelming research” showing that later school start times result in kids sleeping more, which improves their health and academic performance.[..]
I agree that it makes no sense to start school before 8.00 but shouldn’t children wake up early?
My typical school weekday in the 1980s/90s: I woke up at 4.00 am and studied for an hour. Did my morning exercise, got ready for school and had breakfast at 6.00. Then I would take the bus for extra math tutorials and reach school by 8.30ish. School ended by 3.30-4.00. After school classes and activities till 6.00. Homework time and dinner. one hour of tv time. Bed by 9.30-10.00.
This was in India and everyone I knew had this kind of schedule. I enjoyed my school days and childhood for most parts. Curious how it is for kids these days?
Seems to work a bit different in the west. I would've laid hands on my mother if she asked me to study in the morning before school instead of watching dragonball Z or something.
