For me Windows is starting to resemble consumer routers. I mean, some serious resources and engineering talent had to have been spent on the internals, the kernel, networking, drivers. But the thing that the users, the people paying and using the OS end up interacting with ends up getting the least resources and even less focus.

My theory as to why that is is kinda like The Color of the Bikeshed Theory. New management hires want to make a name for themselves and want to work on something that's visible, that they have an illusion they know something about and something that they can use to climb up the corp ladder. So with each iteration some new idiot comes along and wants to start over. Two years later, when the thing's half finished, they move on and a new person comes along...
