Odysee can be censored? I thought the whole point of it was that it used a decentralized, open-source, blockchain-based foundation over the LBRY network, which means that censorship shouldn't be even possible in the first place.
Maybe they mean censor in their frontend, even if the videos would still be available on the LBRY network if you use a different site? Not sure exactly how this decentralized network works.
The idiots on this twitter thread is depressing. I am all for free speech and privacy, but misleading "science" and racism, hate crimes is not what i want either.
No, there really isn't. Either you allow everything, or you get accused of censorship.
Personally, I think that the automatic cry of "censorship" as an unarguably, obviously bad thing is a red flag. It suggests that somebody hasn't thought something all the way through -- or at least, has only considered the ways it affects them and not anybody else. It's one of those positions that is consistent, simple, and awful -- and therefore much beloved of people who prize the first two things.
People who care about not being awful are put in the awful position of dealing with a world that is neither consistent nor simple. People who deal in lies will always be happy to tell you that nothing is ever settled scientifically, no matter how thoroughly they are refuted. People who deal in hate will always tell you that their opinions are just as valid as anybody else's, and therefore not subject to truth considerations.
I am willing to accept those contradictions, and deal with them, rather than constrain the world to a simplicity just because it's easier. But there are a lot of people who won't.
Looks like Odysee is going to be part of the 'lost and banned' soon and will be branded a far-right neo-N*zi haven or whatnot just by not getting involved at all or taking a neutral stance.
With that I predict that they will try to witch hunt the creator / CEO of Odysee like they did with the other alternative platforms.
I thought the point of Odysee was that it used a distributed network and could not be censored?
Otherwise there's no much point to a new video sharing site. Even if you start being uncensored, if you get big enough you'll either be forced to start censoring or be disconnected from the payment processors.
Not that I'm against censorship, there's a lot of stuff I don't want to ever see. But would be good if we could choose our own censors and to have clear rules. What we have now most of the time is not even censorship of specific content. It's more a soft of "network pruning" of central nodes of certain communities.
