Is the great Australian holiday out of reach? (smh.com.au)

Certainly out of reach for young city based couples who aren't prepared to book school holiday camping areas a year ahead and want to go off when it suits them.

Fixed school holidays should be abolished and schools run year round. Who wants to go camping at the same time as every other school child, certainly the teachers don't. We just took our kids out of school for a week, it didn't make any difference to the academic achievements of our two kids; the lazy one or the overachiever.

And it's pointless camping in summer during high fire danger periods when you're likely to be sent home. The government refuses to undertake landscape scale cool burns during late autumn/early winter (as recommended by 52 of the last 52 bushfire royal commissions since 1940) so we now get huge megafires that vaporise hundreds of thousands of hectares of native forest every few years.

Frankly the cost of holidays in Australia is prohibitive, you could have a week in the South Pacific paradise of Vanuatu or Fiji for less money, including airfares.
