Science shouldn't be settling political disputes. Politics is the realm of people's most base instincts and desires - try to step in that and like the man wrestling a pig you'll end up covered in filth and the pig will be deliriously happy.

I doubt the wisdom of people who say - I want to stop global warming so I studied climatology. You're going to open yourself up for a heartache if the plan is to study and learn enough so that you become a voice of authority and then use that voice to control what happens.

It's not like people are terribly confused about what the least damaging course of action to take is. If resources were unlimited there would be little disagreement about what to do. Resources are limited though so we need to choose who gets what they want and who does not. There are messy compromises that can be made. Tricks that can be played. Sometimes there's power enough so that only one side sacrifices. In all of that though Science can inform what choices are available but when it starts trying to make them it will get slapped down.
