If you do put your money into it, it's dissociated from central control, online services that might go belly up at any moment and so on. It completely solves the problem of never really owning anything online (software licences, items in video games and so on).

Fads like CryptoKitties are completely irrelevant to the core tech, just like Bitcoin is in the grand scheme of things irrelevant to the potential of block chains.
