The software in this story is working as intended in its new configuration. It's not reasonable to ask for features to be flagged off on the off chance that someone is running your code on an S/390.
If your test cases don't try it, I'd recommend either removing the code or documenting that the flag is not optional? For industrial code that would be an ordinary, expected process. But open source gets a lot of passes on process.
