Well, in most places in the US you literally can't go without a vehicle if you want employment and food. Even if you're physically proximate to food and other activities of daily living, there are often no sidewalks or paths to safely walk or bike there. There's also a social stigma of walking (the person must be poor or lost their license for drunk driving).

That's due to zoning laws being the way that they are. If you'd change the way you'd build up and zone things it would be possible.
