yes there is a difference between erlang and the erlang abstract format but, given my limited understanding, for all intents and purposes erlang is equivalent to the abstract format (ie i can get one from the other). elixir does not stand on its own and it’s more like a thin veneer on top of erlang than a standalone language that targets the beam vm.

that being said, the powed of elixir comes from how easy it is to learn and use it, the macro expansions (which in my opinion is the killer feature and is not talked enough) and the seamless way it managed to leverage and enhance the erlang ecosystem.
