[flagged] U.S. Navy Sex-Trafficing Scandal in Bahrain (militarytimes.com)

Is this a video? An article? That link leads to a huge wall of cognitive overload. The title sounds interesting but I’d prefer a direct link to the meat of the matter if possible.

There's a mix of videos and lengthy articles. These are the articles I read last month:

https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2020/06/16/...

https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-navy/2020/06/16/a-te...

1. Trust no one. The Thai madam was an informant, and the contact she introduced as another pimp was an undercover NCIS agent.

2. I don't get the impression these guys were making enough money via sex trafficking to make it worth risking their military careers AND criminal charges. Probably just enjoying their "pimp" social status, and the easy access to additional sex, and not thinking much past that.

3. I don't understand why people insist on illegal acts such as holding someone's passport for leverage. If they aren't enthusiastic about making money just throw them out, kick them out of your stable, and make preparations to replace them. Some women just aren't worth the hassle; their bad energy makes them a headache, and they can poison the vibe of your whole team. Cutting one loose early is better than trying to wring additional mileage out of her. A lot of guys just attract "bad energy" women to begin with though...

Nobody tell them what goes on in sub tenders.

I'm not a US citizen nor a fan of US's imperialism, but even I know that's entirely absurd to conflate the criminal conduct of a few enlisted personnel with US's foreign policy.

Otherwise you'd need to apologize for the abject horror of your contributions to the world just because someone who works with you or studied with you or lives close to you happen to commit a heinous crime.

> Otherwise you'd need to apologize for the abject horror of your contributions to the world just because someone someone who works with you or studied with you or lives close to you happen to commit a heinous crime.

I mean, you are responsible for what your neighbor does in your name. Americans are absolutely responsible for this kind of behavior.

It's not hard to simply shut down these deployments, but americans will never do it. That would be tantamount to admitting that they've been swallowing and vomiting propaganda for 75 straight years.

> I mean, you are responsible for what your neighbor does in your name.

No, you really aren't. That idea makes absolutely no sense at all. My neighbor is responsible for his own actions, and that's it. He wasn't following orders, no one asked him to do any of that, and surely he didn't ran his plan though the homeowner's association. He decided to break the law, and that's on him, and exclusively on him.

Extrapolating anything from this is idiotic.

What does "hawk" mean in this context?

Hawks are pudgy political types who are fond of sending other people to go fight for their principles.

Jingoist.

I don’t like it either but history is all horrible in that way and the school of thinking that we’re on some teleological path to kindness is wishful thinking. Also, Hillary was a hawk too, albeit a different kind.

IDK, it's hard to point to a country in the world that has made domination so central to their identity. Rome, maybe? England for sure.

>>>One day humans are gonna look back in abject horror at what the us military has done to the world with the full backing of american citizens.

What is your point, that no other armed force engages in sex trafficking?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Child_sexual_abuse_by_UN_peace...

Or that America approves of sex trafficking? And you came to that conclusion after reading about a lengthy investigation that led to criminal charges against (at least some) of the traffickers?

I am absolutely no fan of Biden but can you cite anything he's said that connects to a doubling down on "this behavior", by which I assume you mean sex trafficking?

My point is that anyone who is ok with a deployed military is also ok with this. There's no way to differentiate the two behaviors. America has an addiction to violent domination.

Edit: comparing a military to a doctor is some sociopathic bullshit. Fuck that, fuck you, fuck the troops, and fuck anyone who tries to say that our military has any positive effect on the world. This is what you're responsible for: https://mobile.twitter.com/fdefects

This is like saying that anyone who is okay with doctors, is okay with medical malpractice.

If you don’t push back against bad behavior there won’t be anyway control it and improve the overall situation.

Doctors take the hippocratic oath. The point of militaries is to kill people. What the fuck are you on about?

>>>comparing a military to a doctor is some sociopathic bullshit.

So how do you feel about....military doctors? I'm sure you've got a balanced, rational, and nuanced opinion on the subject.

>>>fuck anyone who tries to say that our military has any positive effect on the world

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Tomodachi

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Sahayogi_Haat

Military doctors are supporting the military no matter the nefarious means or ends, so yea, they're sociopaths. Maybe if there weren't doctors in the military we would stop killing innocent people for no reason because people would realize the grift.

Also, just because a military occasionally does useful engineering doesn't justify the non-engineering purpose of a military.

<removed unnecessary vitriol>

What has this to do with Hacker News?

I'd be glad if politics could stay away from HN. There are more than enough places to discuss them.
