I find that too often I have a bajillion applications open and get lost. Currently I try and partition by desktop but everything blends together after a while. Will this be free / will there be an unlimited length demo version?

There will likely be a one-time license fee (per major version). I'm implementing a trial period, but it will not be unlimited.
