I'm not sure I understand this. There's a pretty clear non-establishment clause in the constitution, for starters.
After this, my thoughts may be off - I'm not a religious person at all.
Second, wouldn't religious people be wary of government religion? Shouldn't a religious person be afraid that the "religion" that results from government funding be inferior to the organic, god(s)-inspired real thing?
Third, shouldn't we as a society avoid funding specific religions, to avoid making some fraction of the populace angry that we're funding "the wrong religion"? It's my understanding that each religion claims to be the one true faith, and all others are either bad, or even inspired by evil. Government funding seems guaranteed to raise hackles of whatever religions don't get money, which will be some of them, right?
