It's too bad that modern day hardware does not allow similar depth of hacking decades after release. CDs could be still overburned to significantly larger capacity, yet there is nothing like that for Bluray.

Of course there is.
I have no idea what it is, and no interest in that particular technology, but without question there are edge cases and weird engineering loopholes and strange behaviors in any technology like that.
The reason they have reached this depth (1024 color CGA) is because of the decades they have spent hacking away at it - not because of some aspect unique to that platform.
