That's a cool use of LoRa. I think it makes a lot of sense to have asynchronous super low-bandwidth text messages in such a scenario. You won't have time to man the radio 24/7, instead you just check if there are new messages of interest every now and then.
For this use case, low power usage is essential, you want to be able to receive messages 24/7 even if there is a cloud cover for several days in a row.
For even longer range it would be nice to have a certain percentage of nodes that can also communicate with HAM radio amateur satellites.
