People are fleeing their countries to the USA because of poor conditions. The USA lacks the facilities to properly handle all the people but does eventually work through the immigration processes. China is knowingly rounding up citizens based on belief or race and putting them in camps indefinitely... Pretty huge difference and your inability to comprehend that speaks to your intellectual dishonesty be it known to you or not.

The families should not have been separated but how else is the US supposed to handle a surge of asylum seekers? The camps seem lightweight and able to grow or shrink as needed.

I might even agree with just allowing them all in to wait for asylum, it's the US' failure to accommodate afterall.

If they were willing to risk abandoning their homes/community and cross a border illegally they'll most likely risk disappearing if their asylum application gets denied. That's a big risk.

Much like prisons they should be well funded and treated with respect and dignity, which is the treatment we would expect for our citizens if they were temporarily imprisoned in any country.

There's no easy answer for how to handle large numbers of asylum seekers, but intentionally separating families as a way to inflict pain and deter further immigrants is a horrific policy.

Whataboutism is pretty annoying. Please don't use it.

write a post where those camps aren't just brought up as a blatant attempt to steer the discussion into a convenient direction and are on topic, then get it onto HN front page. might want to ask South Park for an episode about them, you'll have an easier time.

I find it both funny and sad that you're supporting whataboutism via a claim of double standard when that is exactly why whataboutism is a logical fallacy. Double standard has absolutely nothing to do with the merit of an argument or action. A thing can be both a double standard and an ethically sound action at the same time.

Hounding another user like this is a step into personal attack and breaks the site guidelines. The damage of bullying away a legit new user is much worse than the appearance of yet another political troll account, even if that's what this one was.

It's obviously not, though, as you'd have seen for yourself if you'd read https://news.ycombinator.com/threads?id=yamato2022 and, for example, https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21133023.

Posting in a political thread, AFAICT. Your implication here doesn't really fit given the available information.
