Calling a 1.5L Prius engine "expensive" is a bit of a stretch, you can buy a lightly used engine for ~$500.
Compare with say Tesla where a single motor runs you over $3000 and they call it "cheap".

I don't think 2nd hard parts prices are at all representative of the new cost the manufacturer pays.
