There are so many comments here missing the point saying "why? just use "X" API" or "this is a waste of time when you will need 'X' API anyway" etc. but they miss the point. It's about 'how' graphics work, not building game engines.
Computer graphics is more about producing an image on a computer screen and whether it's for image processing or a game engine renderer it's the same process and very useful to know whichever field you want to pursue.
