Here's how I do it:

1) I manage a team of fullstack engineers where I do very few coding tasks but also can sometimes chip in on large efforts or when senior people are out of the office.

2) Code liberally on weekends and on my bus ride in the morning on OSS and a SaaS I've built over many years.

Staying engaged technically makes me unquestionably a better manager, but I will impede my team's development if I take tasks in the team sprint.
