I remember those days too. Geocities had a directory full of sites they hosted, also I remember Maxpages, some magazines I subscribed to (Anime / Gundam) had a maxpages website, no domain, just a maxpages URL. Amazing how times have changed where you gotta have a domain. In Japan this is not so, you can be under a hosting provider's domain and it's still acceptable.

The only remaining equivalent now is probably Neocities? Would love to hear of others.
