Potentially fun questions: are there any “DOM-native JavaScript games”? I.e., games that manipulate the DOM for their “graphics”—or even have hypertext in place of graphics—rather than running in a canvas?

The only example I can think of is the Twine engine for Interactive Fiction.

You should look into Crafty, it’s a js game engine which can output to either the DOM or canvas, I’m not sure how popular it is anymore but quite a few games used it. There are demo games here http://craftyjs.com
