I think Dick Proenneke is a way better example of this. He built his own cabin in Alaska and lived there alone for 30 years.

What really struck me was his ability to build a house, survive on his own set of tools and his contributions to science by keeping accurate logs on local climate and wildlife


Alone in the Wilderness and Part 2 are both very much worth watching, but he was resupplied periodically by plane in the summertime.


Sure he was, but his skills are astounding and imposing compared to most of us today. That makes watching his work such a thrill.
