I coughed up the money for a LG 4K OLED set last year, and suddenly I'm in love with 3D. For those that hate 3D, the experience on OLED is a while different world. Well-done 3D releases like Tron Legacy and Mad Max: Fury Road really come alive on this display. If you're in a store where you can demo one of these, get the salesperson to put on a decent 3D Blu-Ray release, I think you'll be impressed.

I saw Tron Legacy in 3D in theatres, and it was one of the most well-done 3D movies I've ever seen, in large part because they almost never used it. Except they did, it just wasn't obvious, and when it was it was obvious for the right reasons.

Likewise, the 3D in the Doctor Who Day of the Doctor special, which I saw in theatres, the 3D was well done because they used it in specific spots and in subtle ways.

3D should be an accent, not a centrepiece. Some movies get this right, lots get it wrong.

Indeed, doing the real-world portions of Tron Legacy in 2D and the in-the-grid portions in 3D worked beautifully. I also happened to pick up a magazine about visual effects which contained an extensive interview with one of Tron's vfx designers, and it mentioned lots of cool details I missed when first viewing the film, e.g. check out the fireworks when they introduce the light cycle battle.
