The HoloLens could make it because it doesn't lock people into their own display. However it's still a long way from being ready for prime time. Two big problems:
1) a very narrow field of vision, about the same my 15.6" laptop screen at the distance I use it. It's very easy to miss virtual objects and having to look for them it's not a great experience compared to the peripheral vision we enjoy in RL.
2) Objects are always transparent so colors are weak. Unfortunately I don't see a way out of this, especially outdoors. There can't be black unless in a dark room.
