MSSQL is basically an OS of its own, and does a lot of things in its sandbox that you'd normally expect OS to provide (like really low-level memory management and I/O, and I think even threading is heavily customized) - and that's on Windows. So it wouldn't be surprising if that is the case on Linux also.
