Confirm in the network tab that you are going 100% local on lichess. My shot in the dark (I don’t contribute to their codebase) is that you’re offloading some analysis to Fishnet[1]

I would rule that out first

> positive change happens

> “Goshdangit why did arbiter of change get lobbied by [tangential cartel]?”

I don’t think it’s a good take, although I won’t go so far as to accuse you of political bias. It’s not like the guidelines say to eat Tyson-branded chicken; Let’s not complain about positive progress.

You know what got the flawed food pyramid created? Lobbying by Seventh Day Adventists. That did not get enough outrage as it hurt countless people in ways that are difficult to quantify. They made fat and meat the enemy across the country because of their religious beliefs. They paid off researchers and even had one claim that Coca Cola was healthier than steak.

Let’s focus on forward progress and not how we got there.

Same here. I wish I could get the MySpace photos back. Alas, login has been scrubbed on their site

What’s the general mood in your social circles? Are people mad at America or happy to be free of Maduro?

Personally, I think most Americans don't give Venezuela much thought.

I think Trump is hoping to get a short popularity boost the way George Bush did with the capture of Manuel Noriega, but people cared more about who controlled the Panama Canal in the 1990s than they care about who controls Venezuela today. And I don't know anybody who expects this to impact drugs coming from Venezuela or Latin America in general.

See the color palettes of any 2015+ blockbuster[1] to validate your belief (save for Wes Anderson, maybe).

Lmao! They used lesser versions of Claude for some people? Very, erm, efficient

It’s 12/26/2025 and my father in law has shown me 10 short form videos this week that he didn’t realize were AI. I’ve done had AI fatigue

Where is this spirit when AWS takes a FOSS project, puts it in the cloud and monetizes it?

It exists, hence e.g. AGPL.

But for most open source licenses, that example would be within bounds. The grandparent comment objected to not respecting the license.

The AGPL does not prevent offering the software as a service. It's got a reputation as the GPL variant for an open-core business model, but it really isn't that.

Most companies trying to sell open-source software probably lose more business if the software ends up in the Debian/Ubuntu repository (and the packaging/system integration is not completely abysmal) than when some cloud provider starts offering it as a service.

Fairly sure it's the same problem and the main reason stronger licenses are appearing or formerly OSS companies closing down their sources.

you are saying X, but a completely different group of people didn't say Y that other time! I got you!!!!

It’s fair to call out that both aspects are two sides of the same coin. I didn’t try to “get” anyone

um, no it's not. you have fallen into the classic web forum trap of analyzing a heterogenous mix of people with inconsistent views as one entity that should have consistent views

Can anyone else see the fish photo and think only of Godel Escher Bach (a book you read 10% of then skipped through the photos of)?

I thought of Escher since tesselation is what he's famous for beyond impossible shapes (metamorphosis II [0] is among my favorite pieces of art).

I definitely read less then 50% of GEB too, but I think I skipped to the Achilles and the Tortoise dialogs rather than the pictures :)

Never read the book, but Escher is one of my favorite artists. So any number of his fish and birds immediately come to mind: https://www.escherinhetpaleis.nl/en/about-escher/escher-toda...

The burned out SWE to photographer/woodworker pipeline in action

It should be a new internet law like Cunningham’s law

“Every thread about alternative careers for software engineers will eventually have a suggestion to begin woodworking”
