In the tech world, GitLab stands out for its embrace of remote work and transparency, setting benchmarks for how modern companies operate. One person at the forefront of this culture is Wayne Haber, Director of Engineering at GitLab, whose leadership embodies the spirit and values of the company. Shadowing Wayne provided a rare look into GitLab's operational dynamics, revealing the principles underpinning its success—from team performance metrics to transparent feedback.

A summary of the article, written by Claude:

The artificial intelligence startup Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI employees concerned about A.I. safety, is releasing a new chatbot called Claude. However, the company's employees remain deeply worried about the risks of powerful A.I. models like Claude becoming dangerous if misused. They compare themselves to the creators of the atomic bomb and obsess over existential threats that advanced A.I. could pose. Still, they argue that building cutting-edge models is necessary for researching how to make them safer, and that having safety-focused companies in the A.I. race is better than leaving it solely to profit-driven firms. So Anthropic pushes forward, attempting to balance competitiveness with caution.

GitLab team member here (the one who was shadowed). Most of my merge requests were for the engineering portions of the company handbook.

Profound: "We're all so comprehensively pwned that if an email address isn't pwned, there's a good chance it doesn't belong to a real human."

Should we be using if an email is pwned as input to antiabuse systems to give them higher confidence?

It reminds me a bit of when the % of emails that were #spam vs ham crossed 50% many years ago.

When a major customer issue is escalated to the development team, it is natural for the team to go into high anxiety mode, over-responding to the wrong things and under-responding to the right things.

Thank you for creating this! I have been looking for something that does this for quite a while.

I have been using poised (https://www.poised.com/) for this as it does it and related things...but have backed off on it since they went from free to paid (though is still may pay for it).

Is 60% features, 30% maintenance, 10% bugs a good target?

(GitLab Team Member) I got a lot out of the CEO shadow program (https://about.gitlab.com/blog/2020/07/08/ceo-shadow-impressi...). So much in fact that it inspired me to create something similar for my role as an engineering director (https://about.gitlab.com/handbook/engineering/development/sh...).

By chance, has anyone OCR'd it to make the text searchable?

If you’re on an iOS device, Safari will search the text in the images which I thought was quite neat.

Here's a copy that has been OCRed by ABBYY. https://f000.backblazeb2.com/file/m-various/bell-labs-direct...
